CELEBRATED JAZZ TROMBONIST WYCLIFFE GORDON PRESENTS CONCERT FEATURING BELOVED STANDARDS AND NEW WORKS IN CELEBRATION OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH
The Wycliffe Gordon & Friends Virtual Concert on February 18 Will Benefit The Augusta African-American Historical Society & Its Ongoing Programs and Services
AUGUSTA, GA – On February 18 at 7:00 PM EDT, The Augusta African-American Historical Society (AAAHS) will host a virtual benefit concert featuring world renowned jazz trombonist, bandleader and teacher Wycliffe Gordon and his band. The Wycliffe Gordon and Friends Concert will include beloved jazz standards, foot-tapping funk hits, and new works that celebrate the Black experience and explore themes of love tied to both Valentine’s Day and Black History Month.
Mr. Gordon, named World’s Best Trombonist by Jazz Journalists Association since 2007, is a native son of the Augusta / Burke County area. After over 30 years of extensive touring across the globe, he has returned home to teach full-time at Augusta University. Though the Covid-19 pandemic has many musicians grounded, Gordon has continued to teach and perform online, often incorporating artists who wouldn’t usually perform in Augusta.
“Wycliffe has built an amazing program for this performance, and it’s sure to have audience members so engaged that they’ll feel like they’re in the concert hall with the band just a few feet away…. He also has a few surprise elements that viewers are going to love,” said Karen Gordon, director of Garden City Jazz. “We are eager to share this exciting program as a benefit for such a worthy organization.”
The longstanding goal of AAAHS, but particularly during Black History Month, is to enable the community, especially young people, to learn more about the fascinating history of outstanding Black Augustans who have made a major impact on the city, the state, and the world.
