It was a GREAT DAY in COLUMBIA JAZZ on Sunday, Aug 12th when over 70 local jazz stars showed up to shine!
It was moving to watch everyone greet each other, smile, tell stories and enjoy each other’s company. This is what jazz music does – it brings people together in harmony! I cannot thank you enough for participating in what will become an annual tradition and event! We have incredible plans for next year, so please stay in touch.
Proceeds will support the ColaJazz Outreach programs
Today is a special day for many reasons. First, we are here to recognize our Columbia jazz community. Our ColaJazz gathering is a result of many individuals past and present. We are standing here together on a road built by the same fire which burns in all of us. One man in particular will always come to mind as he has touched us all. Please take a moment to remember the late, great Mr. Skipp Pearson.
Today also marks the 1-year anniversary of the events in Charlottesville, Virginia. Look around you… We are a diverse community coming together with a common bond that is soulful and deep. Jazz asks that we always seek to better ourselves, to learn and to grow. Jazz lives in the deeper realms and the higher ideals of humanity, of compassion, of tolerance and growth. Jazz brings all people together.
Today also marks the 60-year anniversary of the famous jazz photograph “a Great Day in Harlem”! We are gathered here to celebrate who we are and where we’re going. Our ColaJazz community is strong and passionate. Today begins what will become an annual celebration.
Andrew Carnegie is quoted as saying, “Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.”
Our ColaJazz community’s objective is to come together in the spirit and the belief that we can create a vibrant jazz scene first here in Columbia and then throughout our State. We aim to support each other through events, educational outreach programs, recordings, advocacy and providing a resource for all things jazz.
Henry Ford said, “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.”
ColaJazz has a dedicated jazz calendar where thousands of visitors go each month. It’s a free resource that not only supports you when you post a gig to the calendar, but in doing so, you are helping to create public excitement and engagement for all. Our 2 compilation CDs feature many of your talents and we’re planning subsequent volumes. A 3rd roundtable and panel discussion is forthcoming and we want to hear directly from you. Be in touch so we can show off your work, highlight your artistry, enrich our community, excite the public and our businesses and grow our scene!
An African proverb states, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
I believe in you. I believe in our community. Let’s swell the seas, raise the tides and lift all ships! Thank you so much for being involved!
