SC Jazz History: Fud Livingston
Joseph Anthony “Fud” Livingston (1906-1957) was a jazz virtuoso who not only arranged music, but played saxophone, clarinet, and piano. This Charleston, South Carolina, native composed the music for “I’m Thru with Love,” which was popularized into a standard. The song was recorded by Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Marilyn Monroe, and Ella Fitzgerald, and included on the soundtrack for the films, Some Like it Hot (1959) and Spider-Man 3 (2007). In his title An Encyclopedia of Jazz and Blues Musicians, Benjamin Franklin V, writes about how Livingston gained inspiration from spending time practicing with some of the members of the Jenkins Orphanage Band. We learned about the impact of this band in a previous post.Interesting Fact: Livingston is the great uncle of Mayor of Charleston, John Tecklenburg.
