Listening to Jazz: Black Music Lineage

Part 2 with Dr. Mitch Butler

The roots of jazz did not stop with jazz.

Join ColaJazz for Part 2 of Listening to Jazz: Roots & Lineage, a two-part listening course led by Dr. Mitch Butler. This session traces the continuity of Black American music from pre-jazz traditions into the sounds of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Through guided listening and media examples, Dr. Butler will connect early musical traditions to jazz, swing, blues, R&B, soul, Motown, funk, disco, smooth jazz, hip-hop, neo-soul, and modern popular music.

This is a welcoming, easy-to-follow session for anyone who loves music and wants to better understand how deeply connected American music really is.
