JAzz album of the week

In honor of the late, great Sonny Rollins, this week we feature his 1957 classic "Rollins Plays for Bird".

Recorded in 1957 on the Prestige label, Rollins is featured in a classic quintet setting alongside some familiar faces in a set of mostly tunes associated with Charlie Parker (that being Bird). Side 1 is a long medley of Bird Songs in which each member is featured back to back. We hear from Rollins, as well as trumpeter Kenny Dorham and pianist Wade Legge. Side 2 features a selection from My Fair Lady, the classic "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face". Sonny Rollins is in top form here as is the rest of the band. Add a very cool album cover by Tom Hannan and you have a great record. Check it out.
