That might sound like a strange idea for an opera, but that is the plot of "Porgy and Bess," perhaps the greatest American opera written, a source for jazz standards, and one of the first works to take African American culture seriously as art.

George Gershwin, who married jazz to classical, was inspired by the novel "Porgy," written by Charleston author DuBose Heyward.

The two worked on the libretto and music at Folly Beach in 1934, where Gershwin first heard the music and rhythms of Gullah people. From that, George Gershwin and Dubose Heyward worked with Gershwin's brother, Ira, and Heyward's wife, Dorothy, to craft the work that would become "Porgy and Bess."

This has been Rapp on Jazz, a co-production of the ColaJazz Foundation and SC Public Radio. Support for this program is made possible in part by Fox Music House of Columbia and Charleston.

This week, ColaJazz Executive Director, Mark Rapp, This week, ColaJazz Executive Director, Mark Rapp, gave a lecture and concert to a group of Richland One music teachers during their Professional Development workshops. The ColaJazz Foundation is here for our music educators and their students. We assist on an educator level and work one-on-one with teachers helping them implement jazz into their programs. We send performing artists to present Jazz Appreciation concerts and workshops during or after-school. The ColaJazz Foundation is here for you. Contact us today: colajazz.com/contact/ (link in bio)

Some bullet points Mark discussed…

Band directors, music & arts educators have a noble calling, a sacred calling, a most-difficult calling. By every means necessary, day in and day out, you are fighting to create a community in the service of music.

For many of our kids, you may be the ONLY arts contact they may ever have. You may be the only cultural experience most young people will ever have.

Music and arts create a better world. Insist upon quality music. Deeply rooted music. For quality stands the test of time and calls out the severe degradation of what many dare to call music. Jazz is quality music, Jazz is modern music. Jazz is American history and experience.

Music is LIFE.
 - brings the most different of people together.
 - delivers rest, excitement, hope, stories, feelings, imprints life-long memories…
 - teaches perseverance, calm under fire, creates a support system, friends
 - music creates great listeners, creative thinkers, seeing an idea through to the end

Big thanks to the exceptional music making by Shannon Pinkney (piano), Travis Shaw (bass) and Xavier Breaker (drums).
