jazz album of the week

This week we feature an album co-led by Eddie Lockjaw Davis and Harry Sweets Edison, "Jawbreakers"!

Recorded in 1962 on the Riverside label, this informal blowing session features two top tier horn players leading a quintet for a program of blues, standards and ballads. Mixing the powerhouse tenor of Lockjaw with the swinging, feel good trumpet of Sweets is a recipe for success. You can tell the band is having fun here. A rare gem in the Riverside catalogue, this one is one you must get. This recording also features the piano of Detroit-based Hugh Lawson, an unsung hero of the Detroit school of jazz.

Personnel:

Eddie Lockjaw Davis- tenor saxophone

Harry Sweets Edison- trumpet

Hugh Lawson- piano

Ike Isaac- bass

Clarence Johnston- drums
